OrthoBiologics: Using Your Own Body’s Cells and Platelets to Heal

What are Orthobiologics?

Growth factors and signaling cells (commonly referred to as “stem” cells) can be harvested from our own tissues and concentrated to be delivered to targeted tissues to promote healing and to reduce pain and inflammation. These growth factors and cells can be obtained from our own blood, bone marrow and adipose (fat).

Orthobiologics have been shown to be safe and beneficial in the healing of injured tendons, ligaments and muscle. Anti-inflammatory benefits have also been demonstrated in the treatment of arthritis and in many cases providing longer relief than conventional treatments. While Orthobiologics are an innovative and effective treatment plan, they are not covered by your insurance carrier and are typically denied as investigational, non-covered and/or not medically necessary so you the patient will be held financially responsible for the cost of the procedure.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is obtained from a peripheral blood draw and prepared in a special processing unit to concentrate the platelets and growths factors contained in our own blood.

Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) can be aspirated through a small hole placed in the bone, commonly in the iliac crest (pelvic bone). This aspirate is then concentrated in a special processing unit before being injected into the target tissue for healing.

Adipose Derived Stem Cell Concentrate (ADSC). Like bone marrow, fat (adipose) tissue contains many cells that promote healing and prevent inflammation. These cells can be concentrated and injected into tissues or joints to promote healing and reduce inflammation. This fat tissue is commonly taken from the lower abdomen through a tiny incision in a process similar to liposuction.
